Entertainment Ireland THE LOST SONG reviewed by Mary Kate
O’Flanagan Featuring Camille O’Sullivan at The Cobalt Café,
North Great Georges Street, Dublin 1. From the moment she enters, O’ Sullivan’s unique personality
and the strong sense of theatricality are evident. Her comedic
flair makes the witty numbers all the funnier and her strong smoky
voice offers renditions of old favourites such as Falling in love again, which
can move you to tears. The Lost Song includes forgotten and half-remembered numbers from the Twenties
and Thirties as well as Cole Porter, Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel. The mix
between fresh and familiar is nicely judged and only leaves one wishing
for a recording to take away. O’Sullivan moves between moods with ease
and is a riveting performer but the Cobalt Café, while being a
charming venue, is struggling to accommodate her and her audience. Go with a
sensitive soul and soak it up. Or go with an A&R professional and
sign her up. |
